Murray Hill, New Jersey, U.S., May 3, 2007 –Linde Gas and Ovako Steel will describe the benefits of using REBOX® oxyfuel solutions in steel reheating furnaces at the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST) conference, AISTech 2007, the premier steel industry technology event in North America which begins May 7 in Indianapolis.
The Linde REBOX technologies will also be featured in booth #961, which will be occupied by Linde Gas and BOC Gases. The companies have become affiliates and are working together following Linde AG’s 2006 acquisition of The BOC Group, PLC, to form The Linde Group, one of the world’s leading engineering and industrial gases companies.
Per Vesterberg, Linde’s global product manager for steel and non-ferrous metals markets, will present a paper co-authored by Linde and Ovako Steel entitled "Ovako, Hofors Works - 13 Years Experience of Using Oxyfuel for Steel Reheating; Background, Solutions and Results" at the conference, which will be held at the Indianapolis Convention Center. Ovako Steel is a leading producer of specialty steel long products, including bearing steels, for the heavy vehicle, automotive, and general engineering industries.
REBOX oxyfuel solutions enable rolling mills, forge shops, annealing operations and hot-dip galvanizers to increase furnace throughput by as much as 50 percent and improve operational flexibility, heating performance and temperature uniformity while reducing scale formation and cutting fuel consumption by up to half.
Over 100 furnaces worldwide have been fully converted to REBOX oxyfuel combustion, also enabling significant reductions in furnace emissions, including nitrogen oxides (NOX) and carbon dioxide (CO2).
Tony Palermo, North American metals industry technology manager for the combined company, said, "Linde’s portfolio of unique REBOX oxyfuel solutions gives the steel industry with a range of options for improving productivity and flexibility, reducing costs and cutting greenhouse gas emissions on reheating and annealing furnaces, often as turnkey projects with guaranteed performance. The REBOX solutions, which include flameless and direct flame impingement oxyfuel technologies, have been very successful in improving the performance of existing equipment without large capital investments.
Vesterberg’s presentation provides an overview of these solutions and illustrates the success Ovako Steel had in using the REBOX oxyfuel solutions on 48 pit and two rotary hearth reheating furnaces at their Hofors Works in Sweden.
"Linde began working with Ovako in 1994 to select and implement the oxyfuel technologies that made the most sense for their operation. Since Ovako’s first oxyfuel installation on a revamped reheating furnace, the technologies have proven successful. Ovako has seen throughput increase by 30 to 50 percent and has reduced fuel consumption by 30 to 45 percent while achieving more uniform heating, less scale formation and reduced CO2 and NOX emissions,” Vesterberg said.
Vesterberg, holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Linköpings University, Sweden. Prior to joining Linde in 2003, Vesterberg worked with steel and rolling mill applications at ABB.
